Simchat Torah LIVE!
Simchat Torah – literally rejoicing with the Torah – is one of the best holidays we have. It’s all about joy, togetherness and, of course, eating. During Simchat Torah we finish reading the Torah’s fifth book, Deuteronomy, and immediately start reading the first book, Genesis. You can think of it as our version of Back to the Future.
The celebration is all wrapped up in what’s known as Hakafot, translated as circles of celebration and at Beth El, it takes place twice – this year on the evening of October 12 and again the morning of October 13.
As is custom, all of our Torahs are rolled closed and wrapped in their velvet covers, except for one, which is completely open. Take a moment to find your – or your child’s – Bar or Bat Mitzvah portion.
On Thursday night, the preliminary verses, the Atah Ha'raita, will start at 5:45. Torahs are passed around and the singing, dancing, and eating begin. (For those “of age” Men’s Club will man our special schnapps table!). Seven times the Torahs change hands in seven sets of hakafot. Liken it to a Jewish wedding times ten!
This is an adult-friendly, kid-friendly, singles-friendly holiday where everyone gets high on happy helped by our Shabbat Live! band.
