USY
USY
Youth and teens find a wonderful home to grow socially and spiritually with USY (United Synagogue Youth), the international teen organization of United Synagogue of Conservative Judaism. West Hartford USY (WHUSY), our award-winning chapter has so much to offer. There are three youth groups that have local and regional programming.
USY - 9-12 grades (8th grade often joins as well)
Gesher - 6-8 grades
Chaverim - 3-5 grades
In addition to local and regional programming, there are various international immersive experiences throughout the year for USY in addition to amazing summer experiences.
USY Chapters Are Peer-Led
Teen leaders work with our amazing advisors to offer youth and teens fun and engaging events such as game nights, movie nights, ice skating, Shabbat dinners, holiday-themed programming, and much more. USY also takes part in communal events throughout the year with other local youth and teens organizations. Meetings and program timing vary each month.
We’re A Super “Superchapter”
Beth El’s USYers are part of a “superchapter,” West Hartford USY, which includes Beth El Temple and The Emanuel Synagogue. This “superchapter” enables our teens to participate in USY activities with their friends from all over the community, regardless of synagogue affiliation. We also have members from other area synagogues and encourage all high schoolers to try it out.
WHUSY is a member of the HaNer Region of USY covering all New England. Regional events include weekend conventions at Camp Ramah New England and throughout the region, where teens have fun being Jewish surrounded by other Jewish kids. Other popular regional events include the dances, adventure parks, and lots more on Saturday nights and Sundays.
Please reach out to WHUSY’s Marisa and Max Beede with any questions or comments. They can be reached at whusyadvisor@gmail.com.

Gil Hoffman is the executive director of HonestReporting, which fights for Israel in the international mainstream and social media. A lecturer on political strategy at Israel's College of Management, Hoffman served for 24 years as chief political correspondent and analyst for The Jerusalem Post, where he is now a regular columnist.
