Scholar-in-Residence Weekend: Forever Letter Writing Workshop
Sunday, February 9, 2020 • 14 Shevat 5780
10:00 AM - 1:00 PMBeth El Temple, 2626 Albany Avenue, West Hartford, CT 06117You don’t have to be a writer. You don’t have to love to write. You don’t even have to know to whom you will write. The only requirement: show up and be yourself with our Scholar-in-Residence Rabbi Elana Zaiman!
In this workshop, we will look at excerpts of letters from medieval and modern times as templates for the forever letters we will begin to write. We will talk about tone, content, and how to write to be heard. We will write to prompts to reflect on ourselves, the people we love, and our shared relationships. Write to your children, parents, grandchildren, grandparents, siblings, spouse, partner, friends. Feel free to bring a special notebook and pen or your laptop.
Coffee and a light breakfast will be served.
This Scholar-in-Residence weekend is being underwritten by the Leonard & Vicki Eisenfeld Endowment Fund and Amy E. Toyen Endowment Fund, named funds within The Endowment Fund of Beth El Temple.

Thursday, May 8th 6:00p to 8:00p
In recognition of May being Mental Health Awareness Month, Women's Network has invited author Betsy Lerner to discuss her debut novel, Shred Sisters. This intimate and bittersweet story explores the fierce complexities of a suburban Connecticut Jewish family, mental health, and a hard-won path between two sisters. Published in October of 2024, it has been nominated for a Goodreads Choice Award and has garnered many other accolades, including New York Times Notable Book of the Year, New York Times Book Review Editor's Choice and Best Book of the Year So Far, and Good Housekeeping October Book Club Pick. Ms. Lerner was already well-known for her earlier memoirs, Food and Loathing and The Bridge Ladies. We will also hear from the CEO of Jewish Family Services for further insights about their mental health services. A light supper will be served. This event is co-sponsored by Women's Network and The Emanuel Synagogue's Membership and Engagement Committee. We hope that you can join us for this great community-wide conversation and great company!
