The Roots of Beth El Temple and the Emanuel Synagogue: A Brunch Program at the Faith Adventist Church
Sunday, October 23, 2022 • 28 Tishrei 5783
10:00 AM - 12:00 PMFaith Seventh-Day Adventist Church, 500 Woodland St, Hartford, CT 06112Join us for a kosher brunch and learn about the roots of Beth El Temple and the Emanuel Synagogue in the North End of Hartford, as well as about the Faith Adventist Church that has been in the building since the 1970s.
The Emanuel Synagogue, our region’s first Conservative congregation, stood at the intersection of Woodland and Greenfield Streets near Keney Park for 40 years, from 1927 until 1967. In 1953, a group of Emanuel families who wanted a synagogue in West Hartford organized Beth El Temple, which opened in 1956. In the early 1970s, the Faith Adventist Church purchased the building and has been based there in the decades since. A panel including David Harris, Beth El's own David Klau, and Helen Nixon will share reflections on the history of the two synagogues and of the church that have shared connections to this building, and a tour of the building will be offered.
This event is co-sponsored by Beth El Men’s Club and the Emanuel Brotherhood. Tickets are $12.
Register by October 17 by clicking here.

Thursday, May 8th 6:00p to 8:00p
In recognition of May being Mental Health Awareness Month, Women's Network has invited author Betsy Lerner to discuss her debut novel, Shred Sisters. This intimate and bittersweet story explores the fierce complexities of a suburban Connecticut Jewish family, mental health, and a hard-won path between two sisters. Published in October of 2024, it has been nominated for a Goodreads Choice Award and has garnered many other accolades, including New York Times Notable Book of the Year, New York Times Book Review Editor's Choice and Best Book of the Year So Far, and Good Housekeeping October Book Club Pick. Ms. Lerner was already well-known for her earlier memoirs, Food and Loathing and The Bridge Ladies. We will also hear from the CEO of Jewish Family Services for further insights about their mental health services. A light supper will be served. This event is co-sponsored by Women's Network and The Emanuel Synagogue's Membership and Engagement Committee.
